Ocean Poem

 Ocean Poem
Glistening sunset reflects
onto the bright blue ocean,
  Waves crashing down
in a particular motion,
Children jumping in
with no worry to spare,
        Gulls crying,
throughout the air,
 Sun's going down,
 There's no time to spare,
       beautiful colors are fading away,
        But not for long,

  They'll come back each day.

Te Uru

WALT Participate in the learning of others.
Why? Building on our transition into high school
s.c : be active participants in a new cautral game.
:use our listening skills, watch, ask questions and practice

10CH Grey High came to our school on the 28th of August to teach us a game called Te Uru. They taught us some drills before we started the game and also the rules. The first drill was we had to throw a ball to someone and they had to catch it with a flat hand because you were not allowed to catch to ball with two hands or without a flat hand. The next drill was we had to throw to ball across the circle to others and the two people in the middle would try and intercept it and the last drill was another passing drill and we had to call out their name before we passed or else we were out and also if you dropped it you were also out.

My favorite part was the calling drill because it went on forever. Next time I think they should make the field bigger so then we can have bigger teams so we all can play. They could also pay more attention to the game instead of going off and playing your own games.

Short Narrative

The Threeopeds
In Space 9000 million miles from Earth there is a planet called Meros,
with bright and beautiful oceans filled with fascinating creatures that
can breathe air but also breathe underwater. With their webbed hands
to help them swim and bright pink and blue skin that shines bright in the sun,
these creatures are Threeopeds. Merocaly, the king, with his three eyes,
stands extremely tall watching over his children as his third eye sees the
future and the future doesn't look too good so far...

As the suns shines on the bright, blue, flat ocean there lay a human called
Sam, passed out in the clear waters of Meros. Merocaly had a vision of
someone laying in his waters so he sent his daughter, Awhina, to have a
look.

She walked to the waters
to see but when she got there she was very confused, she has never
seen anything like it. She cautiously observes before she approaches.
Slowly waddling over towards him she screams as Sam rises up from the

water. Awhina quietly walks away but she hears more than one person
talking. As quiet as she possibly can she tiptoes over toward the sounds
of talking trying to listen. As she approaches she sees more than one person,
there is too many to count. She hears someone walking towards her and tries
to get away but Sam grabs her and covers her mouth and puts her to sleep.

Zali was at home with the king as he was about to die. Zali was crying But
Mungalo walks in.
“May I Speak to you in private please?” asked the king.
“ Sure father,” replied Mugalo. Zali leaves
“ I want to you to have my ring and you will become king” the king told Mungalo.
“I can't,” replied mungalo.
His father hands him the ring and The boy puts it on his finger as his father
dies
beside him. He walks off trying not to cry but as he steps outside he has his
first vision and it is of Awhina she been kidnapped. He Sprints furiously  to
find her but as he gets closer he gets zapped by something …she is gone.

As Mungalo searches for his sister he runs into a problem. His mother has
called the whole planet into one big circle to farewell to loss of the king
but the bad thing is it is so easy for someone else to get kidnapped because
there obviously has to be someone else on the planet for awhina to be
kidnapped.

He sprints to his mother to tell her but out of the conner of his eye he sees
someone he doesn't know and doesn't look like a thrreopied so he trys not
to make a seen so know one is scared but as he gets closer his mother
screams has she is being taken away with a random guy to whole planet is now
screaming kids crying and mothers in shook. He tries to follow the guy but as
he gets closer he sees a spacecraft that the guy took his mother into.

He think he might have just found the clue to where awhina may be she
is in the spacecraft with mum. As he walks close just to see he spot awhina
chained in to wall and her mum getting dragged past her.
I knew she would be in here but as he tries to get in he thinks that
he might get caught so he waits till dark to break in.

As it gets dark he gears up to go. Walking slowly and steadily
making sure not to get caught. As he gets to the door he sees the
door is already open he is scared it is a trap so before he walks in he grabs
a long piece of wood and sits it long ways in the door so
it doesn't close. He steps over the piece of wood and uses his laser
to break the chains on his sister and mother. It is very hard not to make
noise but as he gets them both out of the chains he hears someone coming

so he jumps out the doors with his mother and sister chucks  the piece of
wood out of the door, closes the dose and looks it with the chains his mother
and sister were chained up in. As he has now chained to doors closes
he press a button on the side of the door that he thought locked the door
from the outside but it then shot off into the stars and the Threeoped live
happily ever after…. Well so they thought “RUN”

Book Review

Urgent Delivery by Dianne Bates
Illustrated by Chris Norris

Have you ever read Urgent Delivery By Dianne Bates? Well I have,
I thought the book was not that intriguing for my liking and it was not that
interesting. It was quite weird and  I would also not recommend this to
others my age as it is very Kiddish. This is not my type of book but I
read it anyway as I had no other book to read at the moment.

This story is a dramatic fiction story.
Andrew  is about to go on the ride of his life literally.
His mum is about to have a baby on the back seat of the
car while Andrew is driving and the cops are after him.

Urgent Delivery is set at Andrew’s
house, in the car on the way to the hospital
and at the hospital when the baby was born.

The main characters are Mum,
Dad and Andrew who are all a family
that live together and are getting ready for
a baby. Mum is a pregnant  woman and has brown
short hair with wide eyes , Dad is a loving father of two and
has big eyes with short brown hair and Andrew has blonde
short hair and  is a big loving brother to his little sister.

Gravity Work

Highlight the main ideas. Summarize these main ideas  in one or two paragraphs.
Gravity is
a force that attracts all objects towards each other. Gravitational attraction is greater for more
massive objects.  This force of gravity causes the Moon to change direction to make it orbit
around the Earth. Gravity doesn’t disappear just because you are above the atmosphere.
Isaac Newton was the first to come up with the idea that all objects are attracted towards
each other by gravity.

Astronauts appear to be weightless for the same reason that a person on a trampoline
feels weightless when in the air. There is still the same amount of gravity acting,
but there is no floor pushing upwards on the astronaut, so the weight force cannot be felt.
Science ideas change over time.

When does gravity decrease?  Gravity

decreases as distance between the objects increases.”

When does the force of gravity become noticeable?   Gravity only becomes
noticeable if one (or both) of the objects has a lot of mass, such as the Earth.”

Gravity disappears when you are above the atmosphere. True or False? This is false
Gravity doesn’t disappear just because you are above the atmosphere. If an object is  above the
Earth’s atmosphere, there will still be a strong force of gravity pulling it towards the center of the Earth.

According to the text, how long does it take the International Space Station (ISS) to orbit Earth?       It takes 90 minutes  for astronauts and the ISS to orbit around the world

Who first stated that all objects are attracted towards each other by gravity? Isaac Newton was the
first who stated that objects were attracted toward

Safe cycling

Safe Cycling Skills - A statistical investigation

Question: Are Karoro School senior students safe cyclists on the roads?

Recently Room One students participated in a safe cycling skills programme facilitated
by the New Zealand Police.

Jos came into our classroom to teach us the road rules. We had three session the
first session was in the classroom where we had to learn how to wear a helmet properly.
To wear a helmet properly you have to make sure you have a space between your
helmet and your eyebrows which should be the size of your two fingers in between them.
We got taught that with a helmet on the straps near your ear there is a clip that has
to be below your ears and the chin strap has to be against you chin so that you helmet
does not move. He also taught us in the first session what the road signals are.
If you want to turn left you would put your left hand out for three seconds then put
both hand on the handle bar so when you turn you do not fall off and if you would like
to turn right you put your right hand out for 3 seconds put your hands on the handles
and turn. Finally to stop you put your right hand  up and make a stop signal with you
hand for three seconds
and you use your right hand because the driver can see it easier because they
sit in the right seat.

The second session involved a skills based on the court.
On the court Jos set up many obstacles for us we had to go around the court
while going around the court we had to go through cones making sure not to hit
them as we turn our heads to see what the picture was then we had to signal at the
conner and swerve through cones after that we had to bike over a ladder.
Jos made us swerve around the cones and go over the ladder to see how well our
balance was.

Following the court session students participated in a road circuit skills session.
There were people placed around the circuit and marks were given for using the
following skills: Being approx 1 metre from the kerb, scanning hazards, checking
parked cars, look behind before hand signals, correct hand signal, look behind after
hand signal.
The last session was out on the road. On the road we went down tasman street then
turn left  up wilson crescent and came back down wilson crescent then we turned left
again down warburton street then turn right on domain terrace after that  turn right
again onto miro street then took a right on to tasman street and back to where we
started. We all got marked on how well we did on the road.

My marks were:

Approx 1
metre from kerb
Scanning for
hazards
Checking parked
cars
Look behind
before hand signals

Correct hand
signal
Look behind
after hand signals
% Average
Across Skills
5/5
2/2
4/4
4/6
6/6
6/6
79%

One of the collated graphs showed these results.  I think that this shows I need to work on
looking before hand signals.

My recommendation is that Karoro School does more than one session a year so we can get more practice
on the road.
