Tree Weta
By Caitlyn and Zoe
Creeping, crawling, up, down.
Searching, Searching for a place to stay.
Burrow in hollowed wood, under leaves,
blends in with leaves and wood.
Lives in gaps of caves and in holes of pohutukawa trees.
Head: Antennae like whiskers off dogs and cats,
Eyes like little chocolate chips.
Thorax: brown, like chocolate and dirt.
Legs look like twigs, sharp like hook grass.
Abdomen: girl, long, curved c shaped ovipositor,
Boy, short curved cerci.
Preys on lichens, leaves, flowers,
seed heads and fruit.
Life cycle, laid in autumn and winter,
hatching in spring.
Threats, rats, mustelids, reptiles,
cats, birds and bats
